Mentalillnessawarenesshasbeenhighinaspeopleopenupabouttheirpersonalbattles.There’sbeensomuchprogress,butwestillhaveafarwaytogo.There’sstillastigmasurroundingdifferenttypesofillnessesandalongwaytogoinunderstandingthem.Outofallthementalillnesses,personalitydisordersaretheleasttalkedabout.Mostpeoplethinkodthosewhosufferfromapersonalitydisorderascrazyordangerous.Today,we’llbesheddinglightononepersonalitydisorderinparticular.BPD,orBorderlinePersonalityDisorderisapersonalitydisordermarkedbyunstableandinconsistentmoods,behaviour,andfunctioning.Thisoftenresultsinunstablerelationships,impulsivity,anger,depressionandanxiety.BPDisapersonalitydisorderwhereyoufeelasthoughyoulackcontrol,creatingfrustration.Itisthoughttobetriggeredbyatraumaticeventinearlychildhood,thoughthereisnodirectcorrelation.ResearchersbelievethatthosewithBPD,duetoapossibletraumaticevent,experiencedifferentstructuralchangesinthepartofthebrainthatcontrolsemotionsandimpulses.However,itshouldbenotedthatshowsupinpeoplewhodonothaveBPD.WhichmakesBPDevenmoremysteriousandunknown.BPDcanbehardtodetectasitsooftenoverlapswithothermentalillnesses.Onemighttalkaboutdepression,butnottalkaboutorbeawareoftheirothersymptoms.ThisresultsinonebeingwrongfullydiagnosedwithdepressionandnotBPD.ThelistofsymptomsofBPDincludesfranticeffortstoavoidrealorimaginedabandonment;apatternofintenseandunstablerelationshipswithfamily;friendsandlovedones,oftenswingingfromextremeclosenessandloveoridealization,toextremedislikeoranger,ordevaluation;distortedandunstableself-imageorsenseofself;impulseandoftendangerousbehaviorssuchasspendingsprees,unsafesex,substanceabuse,recklessdrivingandbingeeating;reoccurringsuicidalbehaviorsorthreatsorselfharmingbehavior;intenseandhighlychangeablemoods,chronicfeelingsofemptiness,inappropriateandintenseangerorproblemscontrollinganger,stress-relatedparanoidthoughts,severeassociatedsymptoms,suchasfeelingcutofffromoneself，observingoneselffromoutsidethebodyorlosingtouchwithreality.Interpersonalrelationshipsarequitedifficult,butDBTorDialecticBehaviorTherapycanofferskillstonotonlycopewith,butsuccessfullylivewithBPD.Sinceitscreation,DBThasbeenusedtohelpnotonlyBPD,butothermentalillnessesaswell.BorderlinePersonalityDisorderisapersonalitydisordernotmuchspokenaboutasmanyareafraidofit,butitisimportanttorememberthatthosewithBPDarestillpeopleanddeservetobeheardandloved.Remembertosubscribeformorefactsonpersonalitydisorders.ThankyouforwatchingPsych2go.
